In a historic judgment by Supreme Court of Pakistan , the judges have ordered an action against Malik Riaz (real estate mafia lord), Salman (Son in law of Malik Riaz) and Arsalan Iftikhar Chaudhry (Chief Justice’s own son).
We salute Chief Justice and Supreme Court for showing us that, at least in their eyes, no one is above the law.
SC orders action against Riaz, Salman and Arsalan
ISLAMABAD: A two member bench of the Supreme Court comprising of Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif have concluded hearing of the Arsalan Iftikhar suo moto case and issued its short order.
In the short order the Supreme Court directed Attorney General Ifran Qadir to take strict action against Malik Raiz, Salman Ahmed (Riaz’s son-in-law) and Arsalan Iftikhar according to the law. The court said that the three had the right to a transparent trial.
The court ruled that Malik Riaz tried to buy justice, adding those giving bribes and those taking it were both sinners.
The two member bench also rejected the plea of Malik Riaz’s counsel Zahid Bukhari to form a commission or send the case to an investigation agency.
The short order was written on the basis of statements recorded by parties in the case along with those of Hamid Mir, Kamran Khan and Shaheen Sehbai.
Shaheen Sehbai admitted that the son of the CJ was targeted to hatch a conspiracy against the judiciary.
The order further said that Malik Riaz had accepted that despite spending more than Rs340 million he could not get relief. The media should not be used by such persons who do not respect the law and constitution, the order said.

Shaheen Sehbai said that Pakistan top leadership is badly exposed. He said it is time for our leaders to clarify their positions. He said it is very important that our leaders clear this impression that they cannot take decisions without American advice and dictation. He said that like America, an official representative should be present in any such meeting with the Diplomats, and minutes of these meetings should be maintained.

She questioned the authenticity of Wikileaks documents. She said we have blindly believed everything that Wikileaks documents revealed. Talking about American demand to Pakistan to return enriched uranium Maria said that American demand was not for Pakistan only but it was for every country.
She said that the conversations of our leaders should be recorded and submitted to some government institution or respective Ministries. Similarly, the need of officially maintaining record of all engagement, agreements, information sharing or military-to-military understanding should be officially maintained.
Dr A Q Khan commenting on one of the revelation of Wikileaks, that president Zardari promised to American ambassador to keep him confined to his house, said that he could tell by government tactics that they do not want him to walk free.
Dr Qadeer said that Pakistan should never sign FMCT unilaterally. He said Pakistan could do its utmost but America will never sign a civil nuclear deal with Pakistan.
Justice Tariq Mahmood said that American ambassador Ann Peterson offered to appoint Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, as the judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in a meeting with him. He said that the offer was to entice Justice Iftikhar to end lawyer’s movement.
He said Americans always take care of their interest but we are not committed with the cause of Pakistan. He said that there is always one government official accompanying with the Americans when they meet some body to record their conversation. He said Pakistan also needs to practice same thing to keep a check on people holding top-most official positions in Pakistan.
He said we need to get rid of this thinking that without American support we cannot form government.
Khawaja Asif said that the only way we can free ourselves from American influence is economic progress in the country. He said without economic development, eradication of corruption and tight control on profligacy, Pakistan will continue to remain under the US influence.

ISLAMABAD – The big guns of Pakistan got their over Rs 193.403 billion bank loans written off on the decisions taken by the financial teams of various governments from 1997 to 2009.
This shocking revelation was made in a report of State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) submitted before the Supreme Court. The report mentioned the names of those individuals and organisations who had got billion of rupees waived off causing a massive loss to the public exchequer and facilitating the privileged of the previous governments.
According to the list consisting bank-wise summary of written-off loans of 37 banks, that is also available with TheNation, the loans of around 19,711 individuals were written off within the period of last 12 years.
A three-member bench of SCP headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard a suo moto case of Rs 54 billion written off loans case that has been pending in the apex court since November 2007.
“Over Rs 300 billion have been waived off by influential persons in the state as the arguments were being presented by the lawyers before the apex court,” the bench observed.
The SC started proceedings of the case on the request of a few citizens for public interest here on Tuesday. Chief Justice in his remarks said, “How will the looted money be recovered from the big guns of the country? Through which device can the public wealth be returned from the babus?” he questioned.
Criticising the government on failure of recovery from defaulters, he said the list of loans must be prepared at provincial levels so that cases of waiving off the loans in each province could be listed. He said court is ready to take on any resistance.
The court has directed the Governor SBP to sort out recovery mechanism of the loans waived off. It directed to hold conference with the presidents of other 37 banks to inquire about the loans written off during 1971 till date.
