LAHORE: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Monday demanded that the government should table a resolution for the reinstatement of the sacked judges in parliament along with a resolution for the impeachment of President Pervez Musharraf.
Addressing a press conference at the Karachi Shuhada Hall of the Lahore High Court Bar Association, SCBA Secretary Amin Javed Chaudhry said that lawyers supported the government’s move to impeach President Musharraf, but priority should be given to the judges’ reinstatement.
“If the judges are reinstated before the impeachment, an independent judiciary could support parliament in case the president uses Article 58(2b) of the constitution,” he said.
He held President Musharraf responsible for the Lal Masjid tragedy, the murders of Pakistan People’s Party chairwoman Benazir Bhutto and Balochistan leader Nawab Akbar Bugti, the rise of militancy in Balochistan, the killings in Karachi on May 12, 2007, and the deteriorating economic situation in the country. He said that President Musharraf should have been impeached much earlier.
He said that a meeting of the National Coordination Council of lawyers would held on August 15 in Rawalpindi to discuss the legal fraternity’s future line of action.
He said that lawyers would resist President Musharraf’s move to use Article 58(2b). He said that the president should be tried under Article 6 of the constitution.
SCBA member executive committee Khawaja Tariq Sohail and Media Adviser Muhammad Azhar Siddique also spoke on the occasion.
